How to choose a Surfskate?

To help you make the best decision on choosing a surfboard, we have created a short and sweet buying guide. It is based on our own experience and what we hear and see in our local surfing and surfskating communities. With a short introduction to the different surfboard models, we answer frequently asked questions such as which surfboard is best for beginners to ensure the strongest surfing feeling.

The ultimate in fun

A skateboard with the wrong size and wheelbase is like a bike with a seat that is too low or too high - something is wrong. As a rule of thumb, you can calculate your ideal wheelbase by taking a position like on a surfboard: spread your feet a little wider than your shoulders. The inner distance between your feet is your ideal wheelbase. Transposed to a surfboard skate, the wheelbase is the distance between the inner holes of the front and rear carriage.

Driving characteristics

Why is the wheelbase so important? A shorter wheelbase results in a board that is more responsive to your movements, allowing for more radical manoeuvres and greater acceleration when pumping. A longer wheelbase results in greater stability, which gives a longboard-like handling. However, while a long wheelbase may be desirable (if you want a longboard style ride), too short a wheelbase will result in a very stiff, restricted and unstable ride.

The shape

The shape of your deck also has an impact on the riding characteristics of your board. A wide nose will give the front truck more leverage: this is why the same system can feel much looser on a board with a wide nose compared to a board with a pointed nose. A wider board and a deep concave will also offer a more stable position in tight turns.
