It couldn't be thinner. Impressively fast. North has reduced the thickness of the submerged part of their new high-modulus prepreg carbon masts by over 15% compared to their standard carbon masts, while increasing bending and torsional rigidity.

Description

The HM80 favors windless disciplines - prone surf, pump and downwind. The shorter rope along the entire length of the mast reduces drag and increases maneuverability. This results in better glide, more efficient pumping and faster turns. The HM85 covers all disciplines, with an emphasis on wing-foiling.

Disciplines using wind power require sailing against the wind to create forward thrust.

Part of this thrust comes from the front wing, part from the mast. To ensure effective propulsion, the length of the rope in the underwater part of the mast is slightly longer. It increases near the top of the mast to maximize rigidity without penalizing drag, as this part of the mast is out of the water once on the foil. A more efficient underwater body shape means less drag and, consequently, a higher, more attainable top speed.

Ventilation on the mast is a thing of the past. North has paid particular attention to this detail, so that whatever the sea state, ventilation on the mast TE is considerably reduced.

The HM105 has been optimized for racing. The thickness of the submerged part of the mast is even 1 mm thinner than that of the HM80 and HM85, in order to achieve maximum speed. As a result, this mast is not designed for jumping. As with the HM85, the rope length in the underwater section has been adapted to ensure good upwind performance, while the rope length increases above the waterline to maximize rigidity.

A more efficient submerged body shape means less drag and, consequently, a higher, more attainable top speed.
